Nutrition Counseling

Nutrition Counseling is an important part of comprehensive healthcare. Understanding the value of nutrition and implementing a diet planned with the help of our RDs can improve overall health. Good nutrition also increases the quality of life for people with a variety of conditions and illnesses.

Everyone can benefit from Nutrition Counseling, but it should be considered as part of a treatment plan for people suffering from a variety of diseases and conditions, such as:
    • Allergies
    • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
    • Diabetes
    • Digestive disorders
    • Heart disease
    • High blood pressure
    • High cholesterol
    • Osteoporosis
    • Weight management issues
    • Complex or multiple nutrition issues

YRMC’s medical team is multidisciplinary. Our team includes physicians and healthcare professionals from a variety of disciplines – including Nutrition Counseling – who work together for the good of YRMC’s patients. Our RDs assess patient needs, anticipate issues and create nutrition plans.

YRMC’s Nutrition Counseling team includes highly qualified registered dietitians and dietetic technicians. All of our regularly scheduled inpatient RDs are Certified Nutrition Support Clinicians® from the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (A.S.P.E.N.). Our dietetic technicians are registered dietetic technicians (DTRs).

Nutrition Counseling can help you learn how to properly nourish your body. The results? Consider that people with properly nourished bodies typically experience:
    • More energy
    • Better sleep quality
    • Improved digestion
    • Greater ability to focus
    • Reduced risk of disease
    • Improved management of chronic illness
    • A healthier immune system
    • Weight loss
    • Weight gain (when appropriate)

YRMC’s RDs provide customized nutrition education. They tailor nutrition plans to meet your specific needs and work with you to create a personal action plan.

A healthy, appropriate diet is important to prevent diabetes, manage existing diabetes and prevent or slow complications from diabetes. With the expert help of YRMC’s diabetes educators, people with this condition can better manage blood sugar levels. YRMC’s diabetes educators also focus on maintaining a healthy weight with diet and exercise. Contact our diabetes educators at YRMC’s Wellness Center to learn ways to prevent pre-diabetes and strategies to manage diabetes.

Many people are surprised to learn that the food we eat can affect our breathing. This is especially true for people with COPD. YRMC’s Nutrition Counseling team helps people with COPD identify the proper mix of dietary nutrients to promote easier breathing.

Whether you’ve been diagnosed with heart disease, are headed home from the hospital after heart surgery, or you want to eat a heart-healthy diet, YRMC’s Nutrition Counseling team can help. Our experienced and knowledgeable RDs create individualized diets to meet your health needs as well as your lifestyle.

YRMC inpatients can ask their physician or other caregiver about arranging a Nutrition Counseling visit.
