Orthopedic Surgical Services

Orthopedic surgeons are physician specialists who focus on healing injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system – the body’s bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves and tendons. Orthopedic surgeons work with other healthcare professionals to ensure patients experience full recovery from surgery. They are also important members of the hospital’s Emergency Services team. You’ll go to the Admitting Office of the Dignity Health Yavapai Regional Medical Center campus – in Prescott or Prescott Valley – where you’re scheduled to undergo your orthopedic procedure.

After checking in at the Admitting Office, a member of our team will transport you to Surgical Services. We’ll also direct your family or companion to the surgery reception area.

Our Admitting Office hours are 5:30 am to 4:30 pm. If you arrive after 4:30 pm, please go to Emergency Services to be admitted for your procedure.

Many people go home the day of their orthopedic procedure. However, some surgeries require additional recovery time in the hospital. Your orthopedic surgeon will talk to you about what you can expect post-operatively.

Your doctor will provide pre-operative instructions for you to follow. Prior to your arrival at the hospital, a Dignity Health Yavapai Regional Medical Center (YRMC) registered nurse will call you to discuss all aspects of your surgery. This nurse is an excellent source of information that you may contact before and after your surgery. You even may meet this same nurse at YRMC when you arrive the day of your procedure!

Your physician will recommend post-operative therapy to help you re-build your strength and return to an active life. Dignity Health Yavapai Regional Medical Center's (YRMC’s) Physical Rehabilitation Services offers advanced orthopedic rehabilitation from an experienced team of physical therapists and occupational therapists. Depending on your rehabilitation needs, you may even benefit from our AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill. Once you’re back on your feet, you may want to check out the fitness programs available through YRMC’s Preventive Medicine and Wellness Department.

Your orthopedic surgeon will discuss the preferred anesthesia for your procedure and you’ll also hear from a Dignity Health Yavapai Regional Medical Center (YRMC) anesthesiologist who will discuss your procedure and medical history. Together, you will decide on the best course of anesthesia.

Many orthopedic procedures are “minimally invasive.” An advantage of this is that some of these procedures can be performed without general or spinal anesthesia. If this is the case, you won’t feel pain as topical numbing medicine may be used or you may be given an IV with medicine to help you relax.

Your family will find a comfortable Surgical Services reception area, whether your orthopedic surgery is taking place at Dignity Health Yavapai Regional Medical Center (YRMC) East or YRMC West. These areas are staffed by friendly YRMC volunteers who will be happy to assist your family. Visit YRMC’s Cafeteria for meals, snacks and beverages and stop by the YRMC Gift Shop, too.

All children must be accompanied by an adult at the hospital. Also, during certain times of the year, visits by children may be restricted. You may want to call the hospital in advance to find out if restrictions are in place.
