Yavapai Regional Medical Center’s PAWS (Pets Are Warm Support) Pet Visitation Program offers our patients a bedside visit from a well-trained and caring dog, as long as the visit has the approval of a patient’s caregiver. Volunteers, whose mission is to improve patient health with the help of visiting animals, offer the program free of charge.
YRMC is affiliated with the Delta Society, a nationwide nonprofit organization dedicated to providing public education and linking thousands of member pets to people who are ill, disabled or have emotional needs. Delta Society evaluators test each animal to ensure that its health, skills and aptitude meet rigorous standards.
Medical professionals are increasingly aware of the soothing and therapeutic effects animals can have on patients. Clinical studies have indicated that animals may lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety levels and contribute to better healing. In acute-care settings, bedside visits by a pet can calm and comfort patients.
