From the very beginning, more than 60 years ago, YRMC has consistently hired the best, most talented people available. And as we have grown and new programs and technology have been added, the number of employees has likewise increased—and substantially. In just the past four years, we have added more than 400 full- and part-time employees, going from 873 in January 2000 to over 1,300 employees. And we’re proud to say that each and every one shares our commitment to quality patient care.
HIRING THE BEST STAFF
No matter how much YRMC grows and expands, you’ll always find one very important item, employee recognition and retention, at the top of our hospital’s list. Not only do we continually seek out and hire the very best employees we can find, we also work very hard to keep quality employees. We do this by:- Offering employees at all levels a wide range of benefits and opportunities, because we fully realize that “appreciation” and “education” are two of the keys to employee satisfaction.
- Providing TEAM (Transition, Esteem, Awareness and Mission) Training to new employees, to give them a personal feel for YRMC’s Mission, Vision and Values and to allow them to create an individual Mission.
- Hosting an employee awards luncheon, sponsoring Employee of the Month and Employee of the Year honors, and recognizing each of our more than 1,300 employees on his or her anniversary date.
- Continuing the practice of sponsoring monthly communication meetings, in which CEO Tim Barnett meets with about 20 randomly selected employees to receive input on how we might improve patient care and the hospital’s working environment.
- Providing tuition reimbursement, scholarship programs, mentor programs, and interest-free computer loans so employees can take advantage of online educational opportunities.
- Hosting a Life Long Learning Fair to give YRMC nurses and other interested nurses a chance to learn about existing and new opportunities in education and certification. All this resulting in a nursing turnover rate at YRMC appreciably lower than the Arizona average.

YRMC... a home away from home...
A nurse from out of state, hoping to relocate to northern Arizona, set up interviews at YRMC and another larger hospital in 2004. Her husband also made the trip, and while his wife was being interviewed, the husband would sit in the hospital cafeteria, listening to what employees were saying about their jobs and each other. The difference between the two hospitals, said the nurse, was like night and day. At the other hospital, the majority of comments were negative and disheartening.
